Daniela Rubio graduated from UGA in 2008 with a LACS degree. Since leaving UGA, Daniela has worked for Teach for America and is now working with IDEA Public Schools in Texas to help children from under-served communities reach their full academic potential.
A LACSI alumna, Daniela Rubio, has been working with IDEA Public Schools for about 2 years. IDEA is a network of charter schools in South and Central Texas with the primary goal of getting children from under-served communities to and through college. This mission is what initially led her to work with this school system after moving to Texas. Daniela was a Teach for America teacher in Atlanta after graduating from UGA in 2008 and moved to Texas with her husband in 2012 because they both wanted to teach in a predominantly Latino community. They wanted to be able to give back to their community and to give opportunities for students that may otherwise not receive the best education possible.
Daniela was privileged enough to have a supportive family that prioritized education. Unfortunately, this is not the rule for Latino youth in this country. According to Daniela, a lot of the Latinos and African American children that she has taught do not have the support necessary to get them to college or to lead them to academic success in general. Teachers and schools can be the route to opportunity and the possibility of a college education for many kids. She wants to be the teacher that helps students realize their potential and that helps them achieve their academic goals.
According to Daniela, “My experience with Teach for America allowed me to realize that education was my calling, but my exposure to different cultures during my undergraduate years at LACSI allowed me find my true identity as a Latina woman in the United States. This helped shaped my goals and desire to help other Latinos to find a connection with their culture while at the same time helping the part of the community that needs it most. My professors and classmates at LACSI also taught me a lot from many different Latino cultures and their customs, their mindsets, beliefs, and traditions. Having this exposure has helped me form a very broad perspective and cultural awareness of the Latino community in the United States, which has in turn helped create bonds and relationships with students and their parents regardless of where their cultural background.”
Her long-term goal is to become a school principal or some kind of educational leader where she can affect change and provide opportunities at a larger scale. For now, she hopes to continue to affect change in her classroom, school, and community to the best of her ability.
