Our first Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACSI) Spring Break is a seminar taught throughout the spring semester in preparation to travel to Costa Rica over Spring Break. This unique program will engage Latin American culture through online travel writing and film. In ENGL 3800/4800, students will build a WordPress-based website full of writing, photography, and video. Before leaving for Costa Rica, we will study some classics of travel and nature writing to immerse ourselves in the form.
In Costa Rica, students will use Canon DSLRs and GoPro action cams to explore the basics of photography and aesthetics through the lens. With the Adobe Creative Suite, we will apply the fundamentals of graphic and web design, and audio and video production. Using a vast array of telephoto and wide-angle lenses, we will also experiment with time-lapse and slow-motion cinematography.
Many of the recent films can be found on UGA Costa Rica’sYouTube site. For past examples of student writing, please visitwww.ugavida.wordpress.com. No previous experience with DSLRs, GoPros, or the Adobe Creative Suite is expected or necessary.
Beyond the pristine UGACR campus, this group will visit the nearby community of Monteverde, a trip that includes a variety of activities: ziplining through the cloud forest, a women’s arts and crafts cooperative, and the local cheese factory. The final two days of the trip are spent in the Pacific beach town of Playa Sámara before returning to Atlanta the final Sunday of Spring Break.
