Latin American and Latino Cultural Ambassadors Initiative

Promoting Knowledge of Latin America Through the Arts

The Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute is committed to providing opportunities for UGA students, faculty and the general public to develop an in-depth understanding and appreciation of the region and its cultural diversity through the arts.  LACSI and its affiliate faculty are already recognized for their commitment to the arts through numerous, on-going programs that foster cross-cultural understanding and exchange while providing new opportunities for research, outreach and instruction both here on campus and with colleagues throughout Latin America.

Current Projects:

  • International Music Festival of Vale Veneto

For the past 28 years and counting, Dr. Milton Masciadri, professor with the UGA School of Music and colleagues from the Federal University of Santa Maria in Brazil (UFSM) have worked cooperatively to sponsor the International Music Festival of Vale Veneto.  Dr. Masciadri serves as the Artistic Director of this festival—one of the longest running in Latin America and an event through which UGA faculty leave their artistic and educational mark with musicians from Latin America.

  • School of Music International Student Exchange Program

Students from throughout Latin America participate in intensive performance activities with faculty of the UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music.  School of Music students also participate in performing programs in Brazil, Argentina and Costa Rica.  Dr. Milton Masciadri serves as coordinator of this program.

  • Latin American Film Festival

For over a decade LACSI and the Department of Romance Languages at UGA have collaborated to organize and co-sponsor the Latin American Film Festival as a signature element of our annual Hispanic Heritage Month celebration.  For the last several years, LACSI has worked with Romance Languages Lecturer, Dr. Diego del Pozo, who has served as principal coordinator of the event.  Through his leadership, the film festival has grown to become a much anticipated event, with co-sponsorship support from the Georgia Museum of Art and the Consulate General of Brazil in Atlanta.

  • LACSI Hispanic Heritage Month Open House

Every September hundreds of members of the UGA and Athens community converge on LACSI’s Casa Amarilla to help the Institute celebrate the start of Hispanic Heritage Month.  The annual event, co-sponsored by LACSI, the Department of Romance Languages, and the Portuguese Flagship Program, provides LACSI with the opportunity of promoting a full slate of activities, including lectures, films, exhibitions, and concerts to celebrate the rich cultural diversity of Latin America and accomplishments of Latinos in the state of Georgia.

What we could implement with support:

  • International Education through Cultural Exchange

Using the School of Music’s International Student Exchange Program as a model, LACSI would like to create a program that would provide opportunities for students and faculty from UGA and Latin American academic institutions to visit each other—using the arts as a vehicle for cross-cultural understanding.  Through such a program, students, faculty and the general public would participate in academic lectures, workshops, art exhibitions, and concerts.
